Carpenter Falls Unique Area

Carpenter Falls Unique Area is a worthwhile landscape excursion from Skaneateles, but it belongs to the town of Niles in Cayuga County. The 37-acre state property protects a section of Bear Swamp Creek with two waterfalls. Its setting provides a change from the broad lakefront to a more enclosed wooded gorge.

An accessible boardwalk, approximately 600 feet long, leads toward a viewing platform for Upper Carpenter Falls. The access project was completed in 2022. It gives visitors a defined way to see the waterfall without implying that the entire site is a level or accessible walk.

Other routes demand a separate decision. Stairs descend toward the base of the upper falls, while a woodland trail crosses the property and connects with the neighboring Bahar Preserve. These rougher paths differ from the boardwalk in surface and effort. Choose the route according to conditions and the abilities of the group rather than following every branch by default.

Swimming and bathing are prohibited, and visitors must remain on designated routes. The state also prohibits roadside parking here. From Skaneateles, the official directions follow NY 41A south to Appletree Point Road and the parking area near Carver Road. Treat the outing as a drive beyond the village, with suitable footwear and a check of current DEC access notices before departure.
