About Scholarship Plus — Fund for the City of New York
Scholarship Plus combines a scholarship of up to four years with ongoing support for students finishing high school in New York City’s five boroughs. The 2026–27 application opens October 29, 2026 and closes January 19, 2027. It is a citywide opportunity, but not one for every senior: school, academic, income, immigration-status, and engagement criteria all apply.
Applicants must be seniors at a public, parochial, or private high school in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, or Staten Island. The published page requires a GPA of 84.5% or higher, family income below $55,000, and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Preference goes to first-generation college students whose parents have not earned a four-year degree in the United States. Siblings of current or former participants may not apply, a rule the program says helps it serve more families.
The award can reach $8,000 per year and may renew for up to four years if a student maintains a good academic record and standard degree progress. It can be used for tuition, room and board, fees, and other educational expenses under the award terms. The “PLUS” includes individualized mentoring, advising, paid summer internships, and continued support. It is more than a check, although an individual award may be below the maximum.
The application asks for two recommendations and two essays. The program recommends requesting letters early, completing FAFSA, and leaving time to revise personal essays. Scholars are also expected to join occasional events, workshops, and semester check-ins. The page lists information sessions from October through December and decisions in the second week of April; check the portal for any changes before submitting.
First confirm that your school is within NYC, then gather GPA and household-income documentation before opening the application. Ask how the award interacts with other scholarships and which expenses qualify under your individual award. Scholarship Plus is sponsored by the Fund for the City of New York and lists hello@scholarshipplus.org; the sponsor’s mailing address is 121 Sixth Avenue, sixth floor, New York, NY 10013.
