About Tennessee HOPE Scholarship — Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation
The Tennessee HOPE Scholarship is funded by net proceeds from the state lottery and helps eligible residents attending a qualifying Tennessee institution. For students at a four-year college or a two-year school with on-campus housing, the current page lists up to $2,250 per full-time semester during the first two years and up to $2,850 in the third and fourth years. At a two-year institution, the listed maximum is $1,600 per semester. These are caps, not a universal payment; only courses in an eligible program count, and the institution determines class standing.
For graduates of an eligible high school, entry routes include a state-calculated HOPE GPA of at least 3.0 or a minimum 21 ACT / 1060 SAT score; home-school, GED and HiSET students have separate rules. The exam must be taken on a national or state test date before college enrollment. A report-card GPA may differ from the HOPE GPA because the state calculates core subjects under its own policy. If the student is near the threshold, ask the counselor to check the submitted record and the financial-aid office to confirm which calculation TSAC uses.
The FAFSA is the HOPE application and must be renewed every year. For the cycle checked, College for TN lists September 1 for fall, March 1 for spring and May 1 for summer; file early and confirm that the state received the application. Then check the TSAC portal and the campus aid package. HOPE may coexist with other support, but the amount and remaining balance depend on approved tuition, other scholarships and enrolled hours.
Renewal requires GPA checks at attempted-hour milestones: at least 2.75 after 24 and 48 hours, and usually 3.0 after 72 hours and each multiple of 24. A limited semester-by-semester path exists when the cumulative GPA is 2.75–2.99 and the semester GPA reaches 3.0; the scholarship also allows one regain under specific conditions. Before withdrawing from a class, talk with financial aid because the change can affect credits, progress and the five-year eligibility period. State reports and the program guide show that renewal follows specific benchmarks; receiving HOPE last year does not guarantee automatic continuation. Keep a calendar for FAFSA, credit milestones and evaluations, save TSAC notices and request a review before a grade or enrollment error becomes difficult to correct. HOPE can work alongside TN Promise in some cases, but Promise covers eligible remaining tuition and mandatory fees as last-dollar aid while HOPE follows its own rules. Ask the college to explain the order in which the awards are applied and what balance remains.
