About Collier County Museums

Five museums to explore the history of Collier County

Collier County Museums is the museum division of Collier County, Florida, and brings together five distinct sites dedicated to local history and heritage. The service was established in 1978 and its stated mission is to bring residents and visitors closer to the cultural development and heritage of the area's communities. Each site offers its own focus, from archaeology and natural history to pioneer life and the railroad boom.

Collier Museum at Government Center

Set on five acres of native Florida landscaping, this museum features exhibits and galleries that cover the full panorama of local history. It is one of the main sites in the network and is suitable for events such as office parties.

Museum of the Everglades

Originally opened in 1927 as a commercial laundry, this historic building in Everglades City preserves the memory of the Everglades region. Its current uses include wedding receptions.

Immokalee Pioneer Museum at Roberts Ranch

This is a 13-acre historic site and museum that was the home of cattleman Robert Roberts and his family. It offers insight into daily life and work on a farm and citrus grove in the early 20th century. It is available for wedding receptions and ceremonies, business gatherings, office parties, and other events.

Naples Depot Museum

Housed in Naples' restored SAL railroad depot, this museum welcomes visitors in the context of the railroading boom of the 1920s.

Marco Island Historical Museum

This site is known for housing the Key Marco Cat, an archaeological piece of great significance. Its programming includes temporary exhibitions and educational activities.

Exhibits and programming

The museum network maintains a calendar of temporary exhibitions and community events. Among the announced exhibits are Things That Go!, about the modes of transportation that shaped the county's history, from steam locomotives and boats to swamp buggies, air boats, planes, and automobiles; The Untold Stories of the Mexican Railroad Bracero, about the program that sustained the U.S. railroad network during World War II; American Spirit, American Dream (America 250), a collaboration with a local school at the Museum of the Everglades; Underwater World: The Beauty Beneath, featuring oil paintings by Inez Hudson inspired by dive videos; and Self Documented: Community Lived Experience, a community exhibition on the stories and memory of the immigrant community of Immokalee and neighboring areas.

The events calendar includes offerings such as Dia de los Muertos, with workshops on decorating calaveras and ofrendas; Pioneer Pumpkin Palooza, with pumpkin picking, decorating, and hayrides; and historical talks such as the one dedicated to Bo Gator and the Storter family.

Education, tours, and other services

The museums offer guided tour options and programs adapted to different ages. They have a speakers bureau, educational activities, and resources for school field trips. They also run a volunteer program, which the institution describes as an integral part of enhancing the visitor experience and developing its programs and special activities.

In addition, several sites are offered as rental spaces for weddings, receptions, office parties, business gatherings, or other events. The network has archives, press materials, and a monthly newsletter.
