(Re)Engage Alabama Grant Program

Returning to college after a long break means more than restarting classes: students must balance work, family responsibilities, and a program connected to a real career path. The (Re)Engage Alabama Grant is designed for adult residents with prior college credits who return to complete an associate or bachelor’s degree in a high-demand field. The current version reflects changes under state Act 2026-304, whose administrative rules took effect in September 2026.

About (Re)Engage Alabama Grant Program

Returning to college after a long break means more than restarting classes: students must balance work, family responsibilities, and a program connected to a real career path. The (Re)Engage Alabama Grant is designed for adult residents with prior college credits who return to complete an associate or bachelor’s degree in a high-demand field. The current version reflects changes under state Act 2026-304, whose administrative rules took effect in September 2026.

Published criteria include age 22 or older, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, Alabama residency, and no postsecondary attendance during the prior 24 consecutive months. Applicants pursuing an associate degree need at least 36 credits; bachelor’s applicants generally need 72, with a stated exception for a first bachelor’s after a two-year break following an associate degree if no prior grant was received. Good academic standing and an approved program are also required.

ACHE lists 129 approved Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes, but each participating institution may offer only some of them. The minimum enrollment is 12 credits for full-time or six for part-time study; theology, divinity, and religious-vocation programs are excluded. This makes an adviser conversation essential before registration: a major’s name alone is not enough if it does not match the authorized code the college uses to certify the program.

Applications go to the institution’s financial-aid office, which verifies age, credits, stop-out period, course load, and major. The page lists term dates: the fall deadline was September 15 and has passed as of this review; the next published dates are January 15, 2027 for winter quarter, February 15, 2027 for spring, and June 15, 2027 for summer. Confirm which term matches your academic calendar and what current appropriations cover; ACHE does not list a fixed individual award amount on this page.

Ask financial aid for a term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, and other expenses. Keep the award decision, any service or loan agreement, and renewal records. If your studies, residence, or employment change, contact the administrator before making a decision that could affect the aid.
