The Columns Museum

The Columns Museum brings Pike County's historical collections into a neoclassical mansion completed in 1904. Designed for businessman Dennis McLaughlin, the house later served several purposes before becoming the home of the Pike County Historical Society. The building's rooms and decorative details form part of the visit alongside the objects displayed within them.

The best-known exhibit is the Lincoln Flag, which the museum identifies as the flag used to cushion Abraham Lincoln's head after he was shot at Ford's Theatre in 1865. Its account connects the object with actress Jeannie Gourlay and the donation made by her son in 1954. The institution's interpretation provides the context for understanding that association.

The collections reach well beyond a single national event. An exhibit developed with members of three federally recognized Lenape tribes addresses the history of the region's original people and their removal. The Davis-Bailey family collection documents several generations of a Black family in Milford, including photographs and letters. Other displays concern military history and local cultural figures.

Exhibits occupy two floors, so visitors with access needs should discuss the building's arrangements before arrival. The current fall schedule opens Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with different Sunday hours; archival research requires an appointment. The Columns is particularly valuable for travelers who want Milford's history to include the people and records behind its architecture.
