About MIFA Meals on Wheels — Memphis and Shelby County

MIFA Meals on Wheels provides two forms of support for Memphis and Shelby County: home-delivered meals and lunches at community dining sites. Home delivery is intended for adults age 60 and older who are nutritionally at risk and frail, homebound, or living with a disability. Initial screening and referral are handled through the Aging Commission of the Mid-South at 901-222-4111.

MIFA began delivering meals to older residents in 1976. Its pages describe five weekly lunches for people at home or at community sites; meals are prepared in the Vance Avenue kitchen with a food-service contractor. Home delivery includes hot meals Monday through Wednesday and frozen meals to extend food access through the week, depending on the program and individual circumstances. Confirm the schedule during screening.

Community dining adds companionship and a regular lunch routine at sites across several West Tennessee counties. MIFA publishes center addresses and phone numbers; for this option, it directs applicants to apply in person at the nearest location. Do not assume the Meals on Wheels phone handles both options. Menus change, and some sites require reservations, so call before arranging a trip.

MIFA’s main address is 910 Vance Avenue and its general phone is 901-529-4520. Home-delivery applicants should begin screening through the Aging Commission; people able to travel can consult the dining directory and ask about days, menus, capacity, and transportation. Public information does not list one universal charge for every client, so ask about contributions, eligibility, and any waiting list when applying.

Food is paired with human contact and volunteer coordination, but the program does not replace clinical care or guarantee immediate delivery. Explain dietary restrictions, difficulty cooking, recent hospitalization, or the absence of a caregiver. Having the address, date of birth, and phone number ready can help with referral.
