S. P. Dinsmoor's Garden of Eden

S. P. Dinsmoor’s Garden of Eden is an artist-built environment in a residential part of Lucas. Dinsmoor, a Civil War veteran and former teacher, made the house and surrounding sculptures into a public expression of his ideas. The work joins biblical scenes with political and social commentary, inviting visitors to read the figures as arguments as well as forms.

The Cabin Home is built from local postrock limestone cut into long lengths and laid with dovetailed corners to resemble a log structure. Its construction connects an individual artistic project with the regional use of stone for buildings and fence posts. Inside, varied woods and deliberately differing doors and windows continue the maker’s attention to detail.

Guided access to the house and mausoleum follows a seasonal calendar. The exterior sculptures can be viewed from the street, but seeing those figures alone is a different experience from entering with a guide. Travelers should choose the form of visit they want before arranging their arrival.

The site joined the National Trust’s Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program in its 2025 cohort. This is an established preservation milestone, not a new opening in 2026. Its significance lies in conserving the environment and explaining the convictions of the person who created it.
