About Grassroots Art Center
Grassroots Art Center preserves and interprets work by self-taught artists, giving Lucas a place to explore individual creativity beyond a single celebrated site. Opened in 1995, the center documents environments and objects made from materials that can range from stone and concrete to discarded metal and everyday packaging.
Herman Divers’ pull-tab constructions show how repetition and patient assembly can transform modest components. Other artists represented in the center’s account include Inez Marshall, known for limestone sculpture, and Ed Root, whose concrete works incorporate glass. The interest is in their distinct working methods and personal worlds, rather than in treating all unconventional art as one style.
