Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship
The Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship is Arkansas’s high-merit award for students finishing high school with exceptional academic results. The Higher Education Division’s main pathway requires a 3.5 cumulative GPA and at least a 32 ACT or 1410 SAT, with scores earned by the cohort’s cutoff. It is not based only on financial need, and a test score earned after the cutoff may not qualify for the Distinguished pathway.
About Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship

The published award is up to $10,000 per year, generally $5,000 per semester, for four years. At two-year institutions, the information sheet sets a separate year-by-year schedule; funds apply only to authorized charges at an approved school. If eligible charges are below the cap, students do not automatically receive the difference as cash. Compare the scholarship limit with tuition, room and board, and fees the program permits.
Applications go through ADHE’s SAMS portal. Students should check the approved-school list and upload official records because the agency may rely on transcripts, graduation dates, and test results. Deadlines are set by each cycle and may differ from other scholarships in the same portal; applicants who applied before reaching the qualifying score may need to file again or update their records.
After award, students must meet continuation conditions, including enrollment load, GPA, and continuous attendance at an eligible institution. The amount can be prorated if a student takes fewer credits in a final term, and unused balances are not paid out as a refund. Before accepting, ask the college for a term-by-term projection and confirm renewal, credit limits, and transfer rules in SAMS.
Ask the financial-aid office for a written term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, books, and other costs. Keep the award letter, records, and any service agreement. If your studies, residence, or course load change, contact the administrator before that decision affects your aid.
