Buffalo Valley Rail Trail gives visitors a way to leave Lewisburg's built center and experience the agricultural landscape toward Mifflinburg. Union County Trail Authority lists the route as 9.3 miles, following a former railway corridor. The railway stopped operating in 1982; the first trail phase opened in 2011, with an extension into Lewisburg completed in 2015.
Designated parking and trailhead facilities are provided at Lewisburg, Vicksburg and Mifflinburg, with another parking area at Mifflinburg's Tenth Street. The authority lists restroom accommodations at the three principal trailheads. Visitors can choose a shorter out-and-back section rather than treating the full distance as an obligation.
The trail passes working farms and has seven agricultural crossings identified by its manager. Users should stay on the route, watch for machinery, keep dogs leashed and leave livestock undisturbed. Published operating hours are dawn to dusk. The authority lists wheelchair use among supported activities, although surface and crossing conditions still matter to individual access needs.
An important 2026 update concerns resurfacing. The authority's news page retains spring closure notices and a June 2 curing update. A July 2 report by local broadcaster WQKX, carrying WKOK reporting and citing the authority, announced reopening that day. That later information supersedes the earlier closure timetable, while current signs and any new restrictions remain decisive. Contact the trail manager if conditions are unclear.
