About Silver State Opportunity Grant (SSOG)

The Silver State Opportunity Grant is Nevada aid for low-income students attending certain Nevada System of Higher Education colleges full time. The award is calculated from cost of attendance, student contribution, FAFSA SAI, and federal grants, up to an annual maximum of $5,500. It is a financial-aid formula, not a fixed amount for every student, and depends on funds reaching the institution.

Eligible institutions include College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Nevada State University, Truckee Meadows Community College, and Western Nevada College. Applicants must pursue a degree or certificate, take at least 12 credits that count toward the program, and meet the school’s college-readiness requirements in math and English. They must also be classified as residents for tuition purposes; the institution verifies residency.

The award subtracts the student contribution, federal aid index, and certain federal grants—such as Pell, FSEOG, and TEACH—from an estimated cost of attendance. The maximum can change, and the official calculation uses student housing categories. A modeled “student contribution” does not mean recipients must work a specific number of hours; the system says employment itself is not an eligibility condition.

Apply through FAFSA or the alternative form provided by the institution; the financial-aid office determines eligibility and whether funding is available for the term. To continue, students must maintain federal satisfactory academic progress; meeting the rules does not guarantee a new award every year. Speak with the college before reducing credits, changing majors, or budgeting for uncovered housing, transportation, and book costs.

Ask the financial-aid office for a written term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, books, and other costs. Keep the award letter, records, and any service agreement. If your studies, residence, or course load change, contact the administrator before that decision affects your aid.
