About Southernmost Point Webcam

Southernmost Point Webcam: a live window to the southern tip of Key West

Southernmost Point Webcam is a website that streams live, twenty-four hours a day, the image of the well-known Southernmost Point buoy, located at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets in Key West, Florida. The project is produced and maintained by Progressive IMC, the same team behind Live Duval Street, and uses the camera infrastructure hosted on the Live Duval Street network. Its stated purpose is to allow anyone, wherever they are, to take a real-time look at this iconic corner of Key West without having to travel there.

What the stream shows

The camera points at the Southernmost Point buoy, the concrete marker that for decades has been presented as the southernmost point of the continental United States accessible to the public. Depending on the time of day, the broadcast may capture the quiet light of dawn, the crowds of visitors waiting to take a photo next to the monument, or a Key West sunset. The site also describes the presence of trolleys, onlookers, and the occasional rooster that wanders into the frame.

Image archive and camera network

Alongside the live stream, the site maintains a rotating archive of recent images that lets you check what the buoy looked like hours earlier, even if you missed the live broadcast. These images are kept for approximately twenty-four hours before being replaced. Southernmost Point Webcam is part of a small family of live cameras in the Florida Keys that also includes Live Duval Street and the broader Florida Keys Webcams network, designed to give travelers and remote viewers a view of Key West at any hour. Associated sites such as PartyInKeyWest.com complete the offering with practical information for those planning a trip to the Keys.

The buoy: history and facts about the monument

The current buoy-shaped marker was built by the City of Key West and unveiled on September 10, 1983, under Mayor Dennis Wardlow, replacing a much simpler wooden sign that had marked the spot since at least the late 1960s. That earlier sign read "The Southernmost Point, of Southernmost City, Key West Fla.," with a separate marker nearby noting the distance to Cuba. Local artist Danny Acosta designed the concrete replacement, which stands about 12 feet tall and 7 feet wide. Key West's Public Works Department has kept it in shape ever since, with periodic repainting and repairs, including a restoration after Hurricane Irma in 2017.

The monument's most famous inscription, ninety miles to Cuba, has been part of this spot's identity since the wooden-sign era, and it is the reason so many visitors stop here rather than anywhere else in the Florida Keys. The actual distance is closer to ninety-four statute miles, but the ninety-mile claim has stuck for decades. Key West sits so far out in the Straits of Florida that Havana is closer than most Florida cities: this small island is nearer to the Caribbean than it is to Miami.

The southernmost point of the continent

The corner of South and Whitehead Streets is famous as the southernmost point in the continental United States and the southernmost spot the public can walk right up to. A few slivers of land farther south, including Ballast Key and portions of Fort Zachary Taylor and the old Truman Annex, sit slightly closer to the equator, but they are private or restricted. For everyone else, this is the end of the road, literally: the Overseas Highway and the whole stretch of the continental United States comes to a stop right here, ninety miles of open water short of Cuba.
