Sunset Pier: the story of a pier turned epicenter
Sunset Pier, adjacent to the resort, occupies a site with a long history. According to the company's account, the original pier was built in the late 1830s, shortly after Key West was founded, at a point where currents and deep water close to shore made it ideal for docking ships. During the Civil War and the years that followed, it was used by the Navy and later as a coal dock when steam replaced sail. It later served to load men and horses bound for the charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War, and also operated as a ferry dock, a hub for the turtle and shark fishing industries and a departure point for the cigar industry.
In the 1930s, a hurricane destroyed Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway; some of the sturdy railroad ties were reused as pier fenders and survived until Hurricane Irma in 2017. The site remained vacant for years until the developers who built Ocean Key Resort in 1981 saw it as a prime spot for watching the sunset. Noble House Resorts acquired the resort in 1998 and, under the direction of owners Pat and Diane Colee, Ocean Key has become, according to its own presentation, the island's premier destination for food, drinks, comfort and hospitality. After a complete rebuild in 2018, Sunset Pier stands on cement pilings, though it retains its wooden deck and railings. It is open 365 days a year with food, drinks and live music.
