About Uluhaʻo O Hualālai
Uluhaʻo O Hualālai: Connecting with the Hualālai Volcano Through Stewardship
Uluhaʻo O Hualālai is an organization that connects the community with the natural and cultural resources of the Hualālai volcano through ʻāina stewardship. Its work takes place at a site at 6,000 feet elevation in Kaʻupulehu, North Kona, and includes educational initiatives, conservation, and guided experiences.
A Four-Generation Family Connection
The Duarte ʻOhana has been involved in the care of this wahi pana (sacred place) at Hualālai ma uka for four generations. The organization notes that its connection to this kuahiwi (mountain) is deep and seeks to expand knowledge about its natural resources. The family history dates back to a fencing contract for Kamehameha Schools in the 1950s, which gave the family a unique connection to Hualālai. The grandparents, Thomas Sr. and Mysie (Nahale) Duarte, instilled lessons of work ethic, faith, generosity, and love of family that have endured through the next two generations. The organization considers it their kuleana (responsibility) to ensure that this legacy continues so that children can share the resources of this sacred place.
Hualālai Crater Experience
The organization offers the Hualālai Crater Experience, a guided tour that provides insight into the natural and cultural environment of the crater. Reservations are made through their website. In addition, community work days and cultural workshops are organized, for which interested individuals can apply via an online form. To participate in tours and community events, a liability waiver must be completed and signed, printed, and submitted on the day of the activity.
Education and Resources for the Community
Uluhaʻo O Hualālai has an educational program called Connections Through Curriculum, which provides educational resources about the history and natural environment of Hualālai. The organization also maintains a library called Ike Library, which likely houses materials related to local culture and history. These initiatives aim to engage the community and keiki (children) in learning about and caring for the place.
Support and Donations
The organization accepts donations through its website, where an amount can be added to the shopping cart. It also offers the possibility to sponsor its programs (Sponsor). For those who wish to visit, it is recommended to book the crater experience in advance.
