About Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy

Voice of Democracy is a national patriotic audio-essay contest organized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars since 1947. The 2026–27 theme is What a Veteran Taught Me About America. Each entrant develops an original written response and records it; submissions begin at a participating local VFW Post, not directly with the national office.

Students in grades 9–12 may enter if enrolled in a public, private, parochial, or home-study high school in the United States or its territories; the rules also cover dependents of U.S. personnel at overseas schools. U.S. citizenship is not required, but lawful permanent residence—or a pending application not denied—and intent to become a citizen at the earliest lawful opportunity are required. Exchange students, GED or adult-education students, and people age 20 or older are ineligible.

Students must deliver the official entry form, typed essay, and an MP3 recording between three and five minutes, with a maximum five-second tolerance. The deadline is midnight on October 31, 2026, at the relevant Post. VFW emphasizes that students must confirm the Post participates and that the entry arrives on time. The recording and text should match and follow the form’s formatting instructions.

The national first-place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship; other national awards reach $21,000, and each state-level first-place winner receives at least $1,000. Advancement runs from Post to district, state department, and national competition, with selection at each level. Find a sponsoring Post through VFW’s locator and contact it early about delivery methods; not every Post receives entries in the same way.
