Asa Packer Mansion Museum

Asa Packer Mansion Museum examines the domestic world of the railroad entrepreneur who founded Lehigh University. Designed by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan and dating to the early 1860s, the house stands on Packer Hill above central Jim Thorpe. Its scale and surviving contents provide a focused way to consider the wealth connected with the region's transportation economy.

The preservation story is inseparable from Mary Packer Cummings. In 1912 she left the family home and its contents to the borough as a memorial to her father. The mansion opened to the public in 1956 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1985. Borough stewardship continues today; the Lions Club's long trusteeship ended in 2024.

For 2026, the museum announces extended third-floor tours and a seasonal America 250 theme. A video alternative for visitors unable to use the stairs is still described as being developed, so it should not be assumed available. Visitors with access requirements should discuss the actual tour before arrival.

Autumn brings a different visiting rhythm. During October 2026 the announced opening excludes Tuesdays, while Fall Foliage Festival weekend tours are shortened to thirty minutes. These operating arrangements make the museum suitable for travelers interested in original domestic interiors and preservation, but the depth of access depends on the date and tour format. It is a separate institution from the nearby Harry Packer lodging.
