Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG)
MESG is Mississippi’s merit grant for high-achieving students pursuing a first certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s at an approved in-state institution. The published cap is $2,500 per academic year and cannot exceed tuition and required fees; eligibility can last up to eight semesters. Despite the “scholars” name, this is state aid applied to the college package, and the actual amount depends on eligible charges and available funds.
About Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG)
MESG is Mississippi’s merit grant for high-achieving students pursuing a first certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s at an approved in-state institution. The published cap is $2,500 per academic year and cannot exceed tuition and required fees; eligibility can last up to eight semesters. Despite the “scholars” name, this is state aid applied to the college package, and the actual amount depends on eligible charges and available funds.
For entering freshmen, the main criteria include a 3.5 cumulative GPA and an ACT score of 29 or accepted SAT equivalent, or National Merit semifinalist/finalist status. Applicants must also be Mississippi residents, enroll full time, and pursue one of the specified first credentials. Students with prior college credits may face additional college-GPA rules and must apply within the allowed period after high-school graduation.
The state application typically opens October 1 and closes September 15, with requested supporting records due by October 15. The fall 2026 date has passed, so students preparing for the next academic year should check the next application window and any updated academic verification process. The administrator combines academic records with FAFSA or an approved certification to determine eligibility and coordinate other funds.
The college confirms that students maintain at least 12 semester credits, the required GPA, and satisfactory progress; payments may stop if enrollment drops below full time or the term limit is reached. State rules do not allow two state undergraduate grants in the same term: when a student qualifies for more than one program, the higher award is selected. Do not budget MTAG and MESG as stackable payments; ask the college for a written aid projection.
Ask the financial-aid office for a written term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, books, and other costs. Keep the award letter, records, and any service agreement. If your studies, residence, or course load change, contact the administrator before that decision affects your aid.
