Financial education and community programs

SECU carries out financial education work with programs for adults, students, and youth, covering saving and budgeting, credit and debt, loans, life events, investing and insurance, as well as business financial coaching. It also offers a financial wellness checkup, GreenPath counseling services, and wealth management.

The institution has the SECU MD Foundation, which awards scholarships and funds financial wellness programs. In 2026 it awarded 20 scholarships totaling $200,000. The Promising Futures Fund allows members to directly support Maryland students, and 100% of donations go to the foundation's scholarship and financial wellness programs.

Fraud protection and member resources

The credit union offers resources to report fraud, monitor credit, prevent identity theft and phishing, and protect ATM and card use. It has a member relief center for members facing financial hardship and an appointment service, in person or virtual, for personalized guidance on membership, loan applications or refinancing, account opening, and account management.

Self-service options include drive-up teller services, with cash and check deposits, withdrawals, transfers, loan payments, and other transactions.

Membership and presence

SECU membership lasts a lifetime, even if you change jobs or move away, as long as you maintain a minimum balance of $10 in your share savings account. The credit union describes itself as local and community-oriented, and states that its benefits come back to members through lower rates, higher deposit rates, and fewer and lower fees.

SECU was recognized with a Top Workplaces 2026 award by USA Today. Its product and service offering is completed by a network of free ATMs nationwide and financial centers in Maryland.
