About Student Teaching Scholarship for High-Need Fields
This award is for aspiring teachers in the semester of student teaching, a period when many reduce work hours to complete classroom practice. Indiana defines high-need fields as special education or middle- or high-school math and science. An education major alone is not enough; both the specialization and placement must fit the state definition.
The scholarship can reach $4,000, but the amount varies with appropriations and applicant numbers. Students apply through FAFSA and ScholarTrack, and the eligible institution disburses the funds. For spring 2027, Indiana lists an October 1, 2026 opening and January 31, 2027 deadline; the fall 2026 application closed September 30.
Applicants also need Indiana residency, eligible citizenship, no prior undergraduate degree, enrollment at an approved institution, a placement at an authorized school, and the GPA required by their teacher-preparation program. Afterward, they agree to seek an Indiana teaching job and, if hired, teach for at least three years. This is a service commitment, not a job guarantee.
Start the application before your teaching placement begins and ask financial aid how the award coordinates with other aid. The commission prioritizes students who still have state-aid eligibility, so a high-need field does not guarantee funding. Keep the contract, placement calendar, and FAFSA records; do not wait until late January for the spring deadline.
