21st Century Scholars Award
Indiana’s scholarship requires thinking about college before admissions season arrives. 21st Century Scholars serves income-eligible students and generally begins in seventh or eighth grade; the commission says eligible students are automatically enrolled or may enroll by June 30 of eighth grade. Students actively in foster care have a special pathway to join later. Families should verify that enrollment appears in ScholarTrack.
About 21st Century Scholars Award
Indiana’s scholarship requires thinking about college before admissions season arrives. 21st Century Scholars serves income-eligible students and generally begins in seventh or eighth grade; the commission says eligible students are automatically enrolled or may enroll by June 30 of eighth grade. Students actively in foster care have a special pathway to join later. Families should verify that enrollment appears in ScholarTrack.
The Scholar Pledge turns the award into a preparation pathway: graduate with Core 40 or a higher diploma, earn at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, complete the Scholar Success Program, file the FAFSA, and enroll on time at an eligible institution. The program supports students through high school with college and career planning activities. Missing a task or date can jeopardize aid, so families should keep the ScholarTrack calendar and review notices with a counselor.
At college, the award can cover up to four years of tuition at eligible public, private, or proprietary institutions, subject to a 124-credit state limit. “Paid tuition” does not mean the entire college budget disappears: housing, books, transportation, and other charges may remain the student’s responsibility. Check the eligible-institution list for the specific campus and program, then ask financial aid how fees are calculated.

To estimate the real cost, ask the institution for a written breakdown of tuition, fees, housing, and expenses the award does not cover. Confirm renewal, academic-progress rules, and when funds are credited. Keep the award letter and application receipts.
