Olana State Historic Site

Olana joins a painter’s house to a landscape that was itself part of his creative work. Frederic Church shaped the estate around views of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains, with carriage roads connecting its different scenes. A visit can therefore focus on the grounds, the house or a carefully chosen combination of the two.

The landscape is free to explore during the published park hours, while access to the historic house requires a ticket. Individual tour descriptions make important distinctions: the main-floor house tour is listed as accessible, whereas the special exhibition upstairs requires several flights of stairs. Guided landscape walks also cross unpaved terrain. Choose the experience on those terms rather than treating all tickets as equivalent.

The year 2026 marks the bicentennial of Church’s birth. The special exhibition Frederic Church: Global Artist is scheduled to close on October 25. For October 10–11, the site directs house visitors to its timed Explore at Your Own Pace tickets instead of the normal house-tour arrangement. These dates should be checked when reserving.

Olana lies beyond central Hudson on Route 9G. The institution warns that taxis and rideshares can be limited, making an arranged round trip important for rail visitors. Allow time to reach the correct tour meeting point; multiple experiences start in different places. The reward is a visit in which art, architecture and the wider valley can be understood together.
