About Houston Opportunity Scholarship

Houston Opportunity Scholarship serves graduating seniors at selected public high schools in Harris, Fort Bend, or Montgomery County. The Foundation defines first-generation as having parents who earned no college degree in the United States or abroad. Published criteria include a minimum 2.5 GPA, financial need, community service, and plans to attend a two- or four-year public college, university, or vocational school in Greater Houston. Applicants should verify the exact participating-school list in the application.

The published scale can reach $15,000 per year for four years—up to $60,000—for a student attending a four-year institution, or $5,000 per year for two years—up to $10,000—at a two-year school. GHCF says awards became renewable in 2026 if recipients continue meeting requirements, but final amounts depend on the program and enrollment. This is local support: do not assume it can be used outside the area or covers rent, meals, and every college expense.

The program began as a pilot, and the Foundation has said it plans to expand access to additional schools; that intention is not a substitute for an official eligibility list. Check the current-cycle call, submit FAFSA and transcripts as instructed, and ask before enrolling if your high school is not listed. For renewal, keep grades, enrollment records, and service documentation; ask the college financial-aid office how the award will be applied alongside other grants.
