About Consulate-General of Japan in Honolulu
Honolulu combines routine consular services with arrangements for residents of islands beyond Oahu. Its official index covers passports, certificates, family-register and nationality notifications, overseas residence registration, Japanese elections, My Number information and school materials. Activity notices also show outreach visits to other islands, although each announcement limits the services available.
The office is at 1742 Nuuanu Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96817-3201; the telephone is +1 808-543-3111. Administrative hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with a midday closure. The consular counter closes earlier: 8:15–11:45 a.m. and 1:00–3:30 p.m., with a stated latest arrival time for each block. Holidays affect service. For inter-island travel, this distinction matters: arriving during general office hours does not guarantee that the consular section is still accepting applications.
The portal helps visitors determine whether a procedure can start online or requires a visit. Passport and some certificate procedures have online and in-person routes; other matters, including family-register filings, depend on original documents and legal deadlines. Residence registration and overseas voting are relevant to Japanese nationals who maintain administrative ties with Japan. Not every procedure can be handled during an outreach visit, so read the notice and prepare identification, forms and supporting evidence in advance.
The visa section publishes its territorial scope separately: Hawaiʻi and American Samoa. Visa exemption, application requirements and the relevant consular office depend on nationality and travel purpose; residence determines whether this visa section serves the applicant. We do not extend this visa-specific jurisdiction statement to every service for Japanese nationals because the pages reviewed do not make an equivalent claim. The visa page lists its service windows and a dedicated information line.
Outreach visits make selected procedures more accessible to neighboring islands but require advance planning. Recent notices set deadlines, online pre-applications and collection steps for passports and certificates. Immediate issuance after advance mail application ended in 2025. Before booking an inter-island flight, verify the location, date, services and deadline in the individual notice; that announcement controls.
Consul-General Hideaki Chotoku began his post in November 2025. In 2026, the office documents cultural, educational and Japan-Hawaiʻi exchange activities that complement its diplomatic role but do not replace case-specific consular guidance. We could not verify an exclusive Google Maps listing for the building and office, so no score or review total is included. The profile distinguishes building hours, consular windows and visa jurisdiction.
