About Orange County Historical Museum
Orange County Historical Museum works with the history of Hillsborough and Orange County from North Churton Street. Its mission is to preserve and interpret the area's memory and connect it with residents and visitors. Free admission makes it easy to add to a downtown route without limiting the experience to historic facades.
The institution combines exhibitions, educational programs and research. One project documents businesses that have occupied the historic district, beginning with Churton Street. That work explains commercial change through uses and activities rather than only monumental buildings, giving the surrounding streets a different kind of historical depth.
From April through December 2026, it presents United We Stand, Divided We Fall: Unity and Division in Orange County History. The exhibition examines environment, trade, health, education and the arts as ways to consider community connections and divisions. Free guided tours can be requested under the published arrangements.
Opening includes several weekend days, while Wednesday visits are by appointment. This can help balance a longer trip, though holidays and special activities may alter availability. The museum's role in the selection is to widen interpretation from one house or family to a county and the communities shaping its everyday life.
