About Montana STEM/Healthcare Scholarship Program

Montana’s STEM/Healthcare Scholarship aims to increase the number of graduates entering the state workforce in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and healthcare. Its published ceiling is $6,000 over four years: up to $1,000 in year one, $1,500 in year two, $1,500 in year three, and $2,000 in year four, subject to renewal and funding approval. The scholarship is for Montana high-school graduates entering approved postsecondary majors; a field that merely sounds scientific is not enough, because the authorized list and school certification determine eligibility.

The university system says the 2027 application opens December 1, 2026 and closes March 15, 2027. Applicants should prepare early: required records include an official seventh-semester transcript with courses and GPA, a college acceptance letter, and counselor certification of math and science coursework. Final funding and awards remain subject to legislative approval.

The scholarship targets graduates of accredited Montana high schools pursuing majors listed in the STEM/Healthcare catalog. The official guide and fact sheet describe course, GPA, admission, and progress requirements; some fields require specific math or science credits. Before accepting a college offer, verify the major’s code and ask whether transfer credits or an interdisciplinary concentration qualify.

Later years depend on renewal, enrollment in an approved major, and state funding; the agency warns awards are not guaranteed until budget approval and may be prorated if funds are insufficient. A student who finishes a bachelor’s degree in fewer than four years may request that remaining approved funds be applied in the final term if the college confirms the graduation date. Stay in touch with OCHE and keep the award decision.

Ask the financial-aid office for a written term-by-term estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, books, and other costs. Keep the award letter, records, and any service agreement. If your studies, residence, or course load change, contact the administrator before that decision affects your aid.
