Hofer's Bakery and Cafe

Hofer’s Bakery and Cafe connects downtown Helen with a family baking tradition. Horst and Gerda Hofer came to the United States from Schwabach, Germany, in the late 1950s and opened their own bakery in 1973. Their Helen location followed eighteen years later in a former bank building on North Main Street. The official history identifies their son Ralph as the current owner and operator.

Stone-hearth breads and the in-house bakery support the café rather than serving merely as decoration. The dining room uses furniture imported from Germany and a mural illustrating German baking history. The menu combines family recipes with other customer favorites; the bakery case also allows a separate pastry-and-coffee visit without assuming a full meal is available all afternoon.

Breakfast runs 8–11 a.m. Monday and Thursday, and until 11:30 a.m. Friday–Sunday. Lunch ends at 3 p.m. on weekdays and Sunday, and at 4 p.m. Saturday. Tuesday and Wednesday are closed. There is a short changeover between breakfast and lunch when new tables are not seated; a breakfast queue may also close before service ends.
