Smithgall Woods State Park

Smithgall Woods State Park gives the Helen visit a conservation perspective. The state acquired the property in 1994 through a gift-purchase from conservationist and businessman Charles Smithgall. Its landscape, previously altered by nineteenth-century hydraulic gold mining, now includes forest, streams and protected habitat across 5,844 acres.

Dukes Creek is central to the park, but trout fishing is regulated rather than a walk-in activity available throughout the year. Day visitors may fish by reservation on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from October through May. Day-use fishing is unavailable June–September. Overnight cottage guests follow a separate access rule, allowing fishing during their stay throughout the year.

For a first visit, the visitor center’s Discovery Room Museum and trail information help connect the landscape with its history. All visitors must register there. Interpretive walks, picnic shelters and designated hiking or cycling routes offer other ways to experience the property; archery requires advance arrangements.
