History: from the Snow Inn to today's beach club

The site's history dates back to the late 19th century. Before that time, Wychmere Harbor had no direct outlet to the sea and the area was known as Salt Water Pond. Harwich fishermen tried to dig a channel by hand, without success, and chose to fill it in and build a three-quarter-mile horse racing track around the pond. In 1889 the state dredged a 100-foot-wide channel with jetties on both sides, giving fishermen a safe anchorage.

Two years later, Levi Edric Snow bought a parcel of land at the west end of Salt Water Pond for about $250 and built an eight-room seaside cottage. The popularity of the home led him to add a twenty-room expansion in 1892, which he began renting to guests: this was the origin of the historic Snow Inn. In 1913 the hotel began operating year-round. Levi's grandson, Biddie, ran the business with his wife, with whom he had eloped on the property itself. Their three sons, known as the Clam Bar's "Thompson Brothers," grew up at the Inn, in a residence built near the dock that they called Hangover Inn or Spit 'n Whittle.

After World War II, the family expanded into the wholesale seafood business. Trawlers docked at the pier to unload their catch, which along with clams and lobsters was packed in ice and shipped to Boston and New York. The activity at the port attracted curious onlookers who began asking to buy seafood directly from the dock. Thus a retail business was born, selling freshly opened clams served on fish boxes or barrel tops. When retail sales expanded to lobsters, customers asked for them to be cooked and opened, and the family transformed Spit 'n Whittle into the Clam Bar restaurant.

After decades of operation, the historic Snow Inn closed in 1993. In 2010, new owners purchased and renovated the entire property to its current state, preserving the character of the building. Wychmere Beach Club & Resort continues to operate as an exclusive retreat for guests and as a wedding destination.

The company states that its management team seeks to combine classic traditions with contemporary offerings to enhance the guest experience. It also posts hospitality job opportunities at its coastal facilities.
