About New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) — HESAA

The Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) is New Jersey need-based state aid for residents pursuing undergraduate study at an approved college. It is not a fixed amount paid directly to a student: the calculation depends on financial information, college type, tuition and available funds. TAG may cover only part of the price; budget separately for housing, transportation, books and other charges.

Before applying, confirm residency and enrollment status. HESAA generally requires the student and, when applicable, a parent to have lived in New Jersey for 12 consecutive months before the academic period; a separate legal pathway applies to some graduates of New Jersey high schools. Undergraduate enrollment at an approved school, financial need, academic progress and prior degrees also matter. The campus financial-aid office can explain how HESAA classifies a specific family situation.

For 2027–28, HESAA sets different filing dates: students who received TAG in 2026–27 and are renewing must submit the FAFSA or alternative application by April 15, 2027; first-time applicants and students who did not receive TAG the prior year must submit by September 15, 2027. The state record in NJFAMS must then be completed by October 1 or, if notice arrives later, within 30 days. The deadline is based on FAFSA receipt, not the day the form was started. Do not leave signatures, contributor consent or verification for the final days.

The practical sequence is to file the FAFSA—or the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application only if FAFSA cannot be used and the student meets its rules—create or sign into NJFAMS, review the customized To Do List, upload requested documents and correct information before the state-record deadline. Starting in fall 2026, NJFAMS requires multi-factor authentication. Save confirmations, verify the college listed and check both the eligibility status and campus offer: a state estimate and the final credit on a student bill may not update at the same time.

Student forums included cases in which TAG or other aid disappeared from a bill for a few days while accounts were being prepared, even though the state portal still showed an award. These are personal accounts, not a system-wide measurement; they do illustrate that two records are involved. If an amount changes, compare NJFAMS with the college account, ask financial aid whether it is waiting for certification or an adjustment, and request a written explanation before paying or borrowing. If HESAA sends an ineligibility notice, appeals must be filed within 60 days of the first notice.
