The Atomic Bear: Tactical Pens for Everyday Carry and Self-Defense

The Atomic Bear is an online store specializing in tactical pens and survival gear. Its catalog focuses on writing instruments that incorporate additional functions geared toward personal safety and emergency situations, such as glass breakers, multi-tools, and flashlights. The company primarily sells its products through its website, with free shipping to the United States for orders over $150.

Tactical Pen Models

The Atomic Bear's main line includes several models with distinct features:

• Guardian Titanium: made of high-grade titanium, described by the company as the most beautiful and functional pen it has ever created. It includes a practice head for training.
• Stealth Pen Pro: presented as a reinvention of the tactical pen, lighter and more functional. It is available in several colors and has an optional practice head.
• MTP-6: combines a pen, a three-mode LED flashlight, a glass breaker, a self-defense tool, a bottle opener, and a screwdriver. It is not compatible with the brand's standard ink cartridges.
• SWAT Pen: with a tactical look and feel and great impact capability.
• Rebel Pen: more classic in style but with the same durability as the rest of the range.
• Defender Pen: includes a stylus, in addition to the usual functions.

All models incorporate a glass breaker and self-defense function, and the company claims they are unbreakable and come with a lifetime warranty. Catalog prices at the time of analysis ranged from $19.99 for the Rebel, SWAT, and Defender models to $175 for the Guardian Titanium.

Functions and Intended Uses

The pens are designed to write smoothly and reliably while also serving as a non-lethal self-defense tool. The company presents them as a discreet option that can be carried without drawing attention. Additional functions include the glass breaker to escape from a crashed vehicle and, in the MTP-6 model, a flashlight and several tools. The company also sells ink cartridges from the Fisher Space Pen and Schmidt brands, compatible with all models except the MTP-6. Fisher cartridges are made in the USA and can write in any position, underwater, or in space; Schmidt cartridges are made in Germany.

Training and Self-Defense

The Atomic Bear has developed training content around the use of its pens for self-defense. In collaboration with weapon-fighting expert Doug Marcaida, the company created a program called "The Way of the Pen," a curriculum to turn anyone into a formidable adversary in personal protection situations. In addition, the Stealth Pen Pro and Guardian models include or accept a practice head that transforms the pen into a training device in one minute. The company also offers free self-defense instructions for its pens.

The Atomic Bear pens were used by contestants in the second season of the USDC (Ultimate Self-Defense Championship) reality TV show, where they were used against knife attacks, multiple attackers, and sexual harassment situations. According to the company, in the vast majority of situations, contestants who used the Stealth Pen Pro gained the upper hand according to the judges.

Audience and Applications

The company notes that its products are used by professionals such as police officers, healthcare personnel, doctors, judges, emergency responders, military personnel, and border patrol agents, as well as by people looking for a durable writing tool and a discreet self-defense option. The pens are presented as suitable for everyday carry, outdoor activities, and emergency preparedness.

Warranty and Purchase Policies

The Atomic Bear offers a lifetime warranty for its pens, which can be activated in two minutes. The warranty does not cover scratches, but the company may replace the pen, send a new part, or repair it if it breaks. Purchases can be tried risk-free for 30 days; international returns may incur additional shipping costs. All pens include at least one ink cartridge.

Shipping and Reach

The store offers free ground shipping for orders over $150 within the United States. The website is in English and the company operates primarily online.
