Gordon Parks Museum

The Gordon Parks Museum introduces an artist whose work moved across photography, film, literature and music. Located at Fort Scott Community College, the museum connects that broad career with Parks’s hometown through photographs, personal possessions and the institution’s account of his life. It offers a cultural perspective on Fort Scott distinct from the military history of the national historic site.

The collection developed in part from photographs Parks donated after attending the first Gordon Parks Celebration in 2004. Personal belongings followed after his death, and family gifts added photographic and filmmaking equipment. These objects allow the visitor to consider both public achievement and the practical tools of creative work. The museum’s stated mission includes cultural awareness and diversity, giving its biographical material a wider educational purpose.

A dated change affects visits in 2026. From August 7, the museum’s regular hours became Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. Friday afternoons and weekends may be available for special tours or events, rather than routine opening. The museum asks visitors to call ahead because campus breaks and staff commitments can affect access. Admission is free.
