About Harbor House Inn
Harbor House Inn: lodging and fine dining on the Mendocino coast
Harbor House Inn is a hotel establishment located in Elk, on the Mendocino coast (California). The complex presents itself as an intimate refuge facing the Pacific, with an offering that combines lodging and fine dining. Its restaurant holds two Michelin stars and is led by chef Matthew Kammerer.
Accommodation: rooms and cottages
The inn offers 11 options for nightly stays: six traditional rooms in the main house and five standalone cottages for those seeking greater privacy. Guests can choose between garden or ocean views, and some cottages feature a private patio. Each stay includes a lavish breakfast, access to a private cove, down feather bedding, and cozy accommodations. The property notes that cell phone reception is highly limited in the area and on the premises, though Wi-Fi is available. Bookings made 60 days or more in advance grant early access to restaurant reservations before they open to the general public.
Restaurant: hyperlocal cuisine with two Michelin stars
The restaurant features a 20-seat dining room with ocean views, situated above the Pacific coastline. The culinary offering is defined as hyperlocal: it relies primarily on products from the immediate surroundings, with a product-driven cooking style focused on natural heat sources, such as steam and fire, to highlight the flavor of the ingredients. The full tasting menu is available Thursday through Monday in three seatings: 5:30, 6:00, and 6:45 PM. In-room dinner is served at 6:00 PM. Lunch is offered Thursday through Monday in seatings at 12:00, 12:30, and 1:00 PM. The restaurant is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Reservation and service policies
Reservations are required for all offerings. No pets are allowed, including emotional support animals, though trained service animals are accepted in accordance with ADA regulations. Children under 15 are not permitted. The dress code asks guests to avoid t-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, athletic wear, and hats; jackets and ties are not required. Guests are also asked not to wear fragrances in the dining room. Regarding dietary restrictions, due to the preparation of a menu that changes daily, dietary aversions cannot be accommodated for dinner. Seafood-free or seaweed-averse requests, severe shellfish allergies, vegan, vegetarian, celiac, or wheat or soy allergies, and menus without katsuobushi or clarified butter cannot be accommodated. Some core ingredients cannot be completely omitted: katsuobushi, pork-based gelatin, soy sauce (contains wheat), clarified butter, seaweed, and mushrooms in stocks and sauces (solid pieces can be removed). For combinations of restrictions or severe allergies, the establishment asks guests to contact them directly. Vegetable-forward or pescatarian menus can be requested in advance; modifications received on the same day will not be accommodated. In-room dinner is a prix-fixe 6–7 dish family-style meal delivered at 6:00 PM and requires at least 48 hours advance notice, subject to availability.
Events and celebrations
For weddings and private events, Harbor House Inn can host up to 60 guests for ceremonies in the gardens and dinners in the Michelin-starred restaurant. Full buyout of all 11 rooms and cottages is required.
Sustainability and environment
The establishment states that, since 2023, it operates on 100% local renewable energy, including geothermal and solar, in partnership with Sonoma Clean Power, and provides EV charging stations. Its sustainable practices include waste reduction, removal of plastic wrap in the kitchen, recycling of single-use plastics at a local store, reuse of kitchen water for the garden, a water filtration system to reduce single-use plastics, and repurposing fryer oil to make candles and leftover butter solids for sauces and other components. Chef Matthew Kammerer and his team forage ingredients along the coast and grow produce on nearby farms and on the property itself.
Recognition and history
The restaurant holds two Michelin stars. The establishment was recognized as a semifinalist for the 2025 James Beard Awards in the Outstanding Hospitality category. After an eight-year renovation, it reopened in May 2018 under the direction of chef Kammerer. The property is located about 30 minutes south of the historic town of Mendocino.
