About Iowa Tuition Grant — Iowa Department of Education
The Iowa Tuition Grant helps Iowa residents pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree at a participating private college. It does not automatically cover every private institution or guarantee the full cost. For 2027-28, the Department of Education page sets a July 1, 2027 FAFSA deadline and explicitly says the eligible Student Aid Index range and final award amount have not yet been determined. As a historical reference, the listed 2026-27 maximum at participating nonprofit private colleges was $7,500; the state warns that funding and the number of applicants can reduce awards. Do not commit to future tuition based on last year’s cap.
FAFSA is the listed application for this grant, and it must produce a calculated SAI within the range announced for the relevant year; eligibility cannot be assessed from an incomplete FAFSA or a blank index. The grant may continue for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study and can be adjusted for part-time students. It is applied to tuition at an eligible institution; the financial-aid office should confirm campus, program, accreditation and what remains after Pell and college scholarships. The Iowa Financial Aid Application (IFAA) is required by several other state programs, although the Tuition Grant page lists FAFSA for this specific award.
Public Iowa student discussions include questions about estimated offers, college scholarships and amounts that change before the final bill. They are individual cases, not evidence of an Iowa Tuition Grant rule. To avoid surprises, ask for an annual cost sheet covering tuition, fees, housing, meals and transport; separate confirmed aid from pending aid; and ask whether an institutional scholarship changes when the state grant is added. Iowa’s State Financial Aid Programs team lists 877-272-4456, option 3, and grants.iowacollegeaid@iowa.gov.
