About Fort Gaines
Fort Gaines makes the eastern end of Dauphin Island a place to read coastal military history. The town’s current presentation connects the fort with the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. The visitor entrance is at 51 Bienville Boulevard; a donation address on the municipal page and the town hall address are different locations, not substitutes for the entrance.
The surviving site includes cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens and tunnels, alongside a museum and gift shop. Seeing these spaces helps explain the infrastructure behind a coastal defense position: storing supplies, preparing food and maintaining equipment were part of its operation. The historical setting has value beyond a photograph of the walls.
Uniformed interpretation, cannon presentations and blacksmith demonstrations are advertised for group tours. The published arrangement requires at least fifteen people and booking at least two weeks ahead. They should not be represented as performances included automatically with every ordinary admission.
The fort opens daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with closures on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Combine that schedule with the nearby aquarium’s earlier last-ticket time. The municipal history records a 2010 endangered-place designation; it is not a newly issued 2026 award or condition report. Current access questions belong with the fort’s published contact.
