Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

Commerce City wildlife refuge with prairie landscapes, walking trails and an 11-mile wildlife drive; grounds and visitor center have different hours.

About Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a nature option in Commerce City rather than a Denver city park. Its prairie landscape, lakes and wildlife drive offer a different experience from cultivated gardens or urban lawns. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service identifies the eleven-mile drive, Lake Mary Loop and Discovery Trail among the visitor routes. Entry to the refuge is free; particular activities can have additional conditions.

The grounds and visitor center have separate schedules. The official fall, winter and spring grounds hours are sunrise to sunset. The visitor center opens Wednesday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., and closes on federal holidays. Refuge grounds close on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day; Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve have shortened access. Weather and wildlife management can close sections at short notice. A Google label showing the visitor center closed should not be read as the complete grounds timetable.

Wildlife observation requires restraint. Remain on authorized trails, follow posted vehicle restrictions and stay inside the vehicle when viewing bison. Only service dogs are allowed; ordinary pet access differs from an urban park. Swimming and wading are prohibited. The refuge's official Junior Ranger material includes English and Spanish versions for families, with activity completion requirements.

The visitor-information number is 303-289-0930, distinct from the administration line. From Quebec Street, the published approach turns east onto Prairie Parkway and north onto Gateway Road. Wildlife sightings vary; neither a previous review nor the species list guarantees an encounter. National agency social accounts and its logo are identified as agency-wide rather than refuge-specific.

Google review excerpts: Three visible Google reviews praise the wildlife drive, nature close to the Denver area or personally observed animals. The excerpts are partly truncated; reported sightings are individual experiences and do not establish guaranteed species or the best viewing hour.
