Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve

Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve protects a series of separate landscapes along the Hudson rather than a single enclosed park with one entrance. Wooded slopes, rocky ridges and river-edge areas create different kinds of outings. Cold Spring provides a useful base, but the trail chosen determines the actual arrival point and the effort required.

For 2026, the central planning fact is the Breakneck closure. The official notice dates the start of the two-year project to April 21, 2025, covering the Breakneck Ridge access, nearby affected trails and the Metro-North station. The project information anticipates the connector and bridge in 2027. It should not be presented as the normal available starting point for a hike this year.

The project’s alternative-hikes guidance identifies options such as Bull Hill, the Cornish Estate approach and Little Stony Point, with different gradients and distances. Bull Hill is a steep outing, while the other choices offer different levels of effort. Check the official map and current notices before selecting a route; the walk from the station may add distance and does not have continuous sidewalks everywhere.

The preserve opens from sunrise to sunset and prohibits overnight camping and fires. Parking is limited at many trailheads. A good visit starts with one suitable, currently open route and enough time to complete it, rather than an attempt to improvise around a closed access.
