About Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program

Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program: mental health treatment in nine states

Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program is an American organization dedicated to the treatment of mental health disorders and co-occurring disorders. Its offerings combine in-person programs at more than 30 centers across nine states and an online treatment program. The organization serves adults and adolescents with separate programs and states that it works with most medical insurers.

Disorders and clinical approach

The program treats mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as co-occurring disorders that combine a mental health condition with a substance use disorder. The care approach is described as measurement-based: the organization assesses 27 wellness indicators—including mental and physical health histories, co-occurring conditions, and social influences—before, during, and after treatment.

Among the therapies used are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). The offering includes individual and group sessions, experiential therapies, and clinical therapies.

Levels of care

The organization structures its care into four levels: online treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, and residential treatment with 24/7 structured support. The online program is presented as an alternative with the same approach as in-person care.

Populations served

In addition to the distinction between adults and adolescents, the program notes specific care for veterans and first responders, as well as for the LGBTQIA+ community. The organization maintains that mental health and co-occurring disorders do not discriminate and that care must be adapted to each person's situation.

Results and measurement

The organization publishes patient results based on its measurement approach, verified by Mass General Brigham, a teaching hospital of Harvard. According to those data, 97% of patients say they feel hopeful about their future after treatment; 97% know when to ask for help instead of isolating; 96% believe they can meet their personal goals after treatment; and 95% believe they can handle what happens in life.

History and coverage

Founded in 1997, Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program has nearly three decades of activity and states it has helped thousands of adolescents and young adults. Its network includes more than 30 centers in California, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, in addition to the online program. The organization is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Discovery for Life Program

The Discovery for Life program includes free, unlimited access to Discovery365, a service that uses artificial intelligence technology to intervene when the patient needs additional support during the first year after treatment. The program also includes online and in-person support groups, social events for former patients, and educational content through an alumni app.

Insurance coverage

The organization works with insurers such as Cigna, Humana, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser, Optum, and TRICARE, and offers a benefits assessment for those who need to know their coverage. Admissions is available 24/7.
