Horizontal Coffee & Books

Horizontal Coffee & Books gives a coffee break two tempos: order espresso or a pour-over, then stay among the shelves. Owner David Kallevig opened Horizontal Books in 2008; in 2021 he added the coffee bar and renamed it Index Coffee and Books. In 2026 it returned to the Horizontal Coffee and Books name, which better reflects the room and the way books are displayed. This is an identity change, not a change of ownership, and it helps visitors avoid searching for the former name on a map.

The shop brings together new and used titles, many overstock or remainder copies, with a stepped discount for buying several books. To drink while browsing, there are espresso, pour-over, flavored lattes and tea, with beans from Cleveland roaster Ready Set. Customers describe a quiet room for working, lingering conversation or browsing; the marzipan latte and house-made syrups receive particular affection. It is not a brunch café, and that focused simplicity is part of its appeal.

The address is a short walk from West Side Market, making it easy to pair a market visit with coffee and a search through the shelves without getting back in the car. Book inventory changes constantly, and the shop is small; if you have a particular title in mind, the store advises calling first. The 2026 update matters to visitors: the business now uses Horizontal rather than Index on its official channels, although older reviews and articles may still use the previous name.
