Alpharus Health: Addiction and Mental Health Treatment in Illinois and Missouri

Alpharus Health, formerly known as Gateway Foundation, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to behavioral health care. Founded in Chicago in 1968, it has nearly six decades of experience treating substance use disorders, mental health issues, and behavioral addictions. Its work combines community centers and programs in correctional settings.

Treatment Areas

The organization treats substance use disorders, alcohol use, mental health disorders, and behavioral addictions such as pathological gambling and other process addictions. Its service catalog includes therapy, specialty programs, residential withdrawal management (detox), medication-assisted recovery, DUI services, and support groups.

Care Modalities and Settings

Care is organized at different levels: residential, outpatient, virtual outpatient, Recovery Home, and programs aimed at the correctional setting. In the latter case, the organization offers in-custody treatment and Day Reporting programs, in addition to having a specific Corrections division and its own network of correctional facilities.

Geographic Presence

The organization operates in two states. In Illinois, it has locations in Aurora, Bloomington, Carbondale, Caseyville, Chicago (with locations in Independence, Kedzie, and River North), Downers Grove, Gurnee, Jacksonville, Joliet, Lake Villa, Peoria, Springfield (including Springfield Outpatient), and Swansea. In Missouri, it has a presence in St. Louis. Its headquarters is in Chicago.

Track Record and Recognitions

According to the organization's own presentation, for six consecutive years several of its locations have been recognized by Newsweek among the best addiction treatment centers in the United States, including the center ranked first in Illinois. The organization states it has served more than one million people and reports satisfaction rates of 94% in residential settings and 96% in outpatient settings.

Access to Care

Alpharus Health works with multiple levels of care, insurance partnerships, and financial assistance options to expand access to treatment. The organization indicates it serves both people seeking help for the first time and family members and patients, and offers guidance on what to expect during the first contact with treatment.

Resources and Institutional Activity

The organization maintains a resource library with articles, recovery stories, and professional materials, as well as publishing news and events. Among its initiatives is the Beacon House community fund, whose 2025 grants, totaling $200,000, were allocated to programs for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders in Monterey County.
