About Consulate-General of Japan in Boston
Boston’s district covers six New England areas: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut except Fairfield County. That exception sends Fairfield County residents to New York. The office also requires district residence for many visa applications; a work address or the nearest consulate does not replace checking where you live.
The consular catalogue includes passports, family-register and nationality matters, certificates, overseas voting and assistance to Japanese nationals. Some passport work can begin online, but collection is in person. Certificate rules differ by document, and mail options do not apply to every request, so identify the exact certificate before gathering original papers.
Counter service is walk-in only, 9:00 a.m.–12:15 p.m. and 1:15–4 p.m. Visitors are asked to arrive thirty minutes before closing. The office is at 100 High Street, 6th Floor, near South Station; government photo ID and a security screening are part of entry. Transit connections make the location reachable from across the region, but they do not eliminate waiting or guarantee enough time for a late arrival.
For visas, the office distinguishes a short-term tourism eVisa—single entry and hotel accommodation among its conditions—from paper applications. Published estimates include five to ten business days for certain eVisas and about five business days for standard in-person paper processing, although individual cases can take longer. Some eligible residents may mail paper applications, but return by mail of the visa-bearing passport is suspended; collection must be in person or by an option authorised by the office.
Official notices in 2026 identify Seiichiro Takahashi as consul general. The post also provides cultural information, education resources and academic programmes separate from the consular counter. We could not stably verify a rating and review count for the exact Google Maps listing, so we do not add figures or comments from other directories.
