About Idaho Opportunity Scholarship

The Idaho Opportunity Scholarship is a state award based on a combination of financial need and academic merit, administered by the State Board of Education through Scholarship Idaho. It is for residents who graduated or will graduate from an Idaho high school, Idaho homeschool, or an equivalent GED/HSE earned in the state, and who will begin in the fall in a certificate program, first associate degree, or first bachelor’s at an eligible Idaho institution. The published minimum is a 2.7 unweighted cumulative GPA.

The program lists up to $3,500 per academic year and renewal for as many as four years, but the actual award may be smaller or even zero. Idaho calls it a “last dollars” scholarship: other grants and scholarships are considered first, and the award may fill part of a remaining gap without exceeding eligible tuition, fees, or recognized attendance costs. Renewal requires a timely FAFSA, satisfactory academic progress, and on-schedule progress toward the degree; students starting without college credits must meet the annual credit pace in the rules.

The 2026–27 application opened October 1, 2026 and closes March 1, 2027; FAFSA must also be submitted by that date. Apply in Scholarship Idaho, where official offers are issued and must be accepted or declined by the date shown in the notice; failing to respond counts as a refusal. Before submitting, confirm the campus is eligible, residency and graduation records match the rules, and the account email is active. Then compare the offer with the full aid package rather than assuming the maximum will be paid as cash.
