About SUNY Broome Second Chance Scholarship Program

Returning to college after an interruption can be difficult when expenses, work, and doubts about readiness intersect. SUNY Broome Community College maintains a Second Chance Scholarship for enrolled students who show potential and motivation despite economic or educational disadvantages. Aid is calculated each semester based on credits completed and GPA; it may support a student for up to four consecutive semesters or until graduation, whichever comes first.

The Fall 2026 application opened October 1 and closes December 1. Applicants need a FAFSA, current enrollment in at least six credits, economic or academic disadvantage, and motivation to complete an associate degree. To receive payments and continue, students must maintain at least six credits and a 2.0 semester GPA; the program page says a grade of D in any course disqualifies them. Semester awards vary by credits and GPA, from $500 for part-time students to $1,500 for full-time students with a higher GPA, plus a $250 bonus for a 4.0.

The application is submitted online through a SUNY Broome school account; applicants should finish before the deadline and check their dashboard for additional documents. Notices go to the student email and, once approved, funds are applied to the college account after semester grades are reviewed. If federal student loans have already been disbursed, federal rules may require a later scholarship to reduce the outstanding loan principal. The Foundation says its general Spring scholarship cycle will reopen in January 2027.

To compare this benefit with other options, ask financial aid for an estimate separating tuition, fees, housing, and excluded expenses. Confirm whether it can renew, what academic progress it requires, and whom to contact if payment does not appear on the account. Keep award letters and receipts until the school confirms disbursement.
