Mount Beacon Park

Mount Beacon Park is the choice for seeing the Hudson Valley from above, provided the climb suits the visitor. The approach begins with stairs on the course of the former Beacon Incline Railway and continues on a steep trail with switchbacks. This is a walking ascent, not an operating funicular ride or a level approach to a roadside overlook.

The reward is a broad view across the river landscape, with the Hudson Highlands and Catskills described in the park’s official information. Visibility depends on conditions. Choose a clear day if the view is the main purpose, while allowing the trail surface and weather to determine whether the ascent is sensible.

The South Mount Beacon fire tower is a further objective, not the same stopping point as the initial overlook. Scenic Hudson describes it as another mile away, with an additional climb up the tower. Travelers should decide on that extension before setting out and leave enough time and energy for the return.
