About Louisiana GO Grant — LOSFA

Louisiana GO Grant answers a different question from TOPS: what if a student still has financial need after other aid? It is a need-based grant for Louisiana residents who receive Pell, have remaining unmet need and attend an eligible institution at least half-time. The minimum is six semester credits or four quarter credits. Eligibility considers cost of attendance, Student Aid Index and other gift aid, so the award cannot be predicted from family income or tuition alone.

For the current year, LOSFA posts an annual range of $300 to $3,000. An individual award depends on the allocation received by the institution and its packaging policy; the state page also says the grant is not paid for summer sessions, quarters or terms. Two students with similar need can therefore receive different offers at different campuses, and the maximum is not a promise. Ask the aid office how it calculated the award, which term it covers, when it will post and what charges remain outside the grant.

The application route starts with the FAFSA: the 2026–27 form is open, and LOSFA lists GO Grant among the programs that use it. Applicants must be Louisiana residents when they file and report the state as their true domicile; if a student relies on a resident parent but lists another state on FAFSA, LOSFA may request a residency affidavit. The college then assesses Pell eligibility and remaining need after other grants and scholarships. Filing FAFSA is not the same as receiving an award, so review the school package and notices.

The grant can renew if the student files FAFSA each year, remains eligible for Pell and still has qualifying unmet need. Its lifetime maximum is tied to Pell eligibility limits rather than a guaranteed identical amount in every year. Submit FAFSA early, answer verification requests and ask whether the campus allocation has been committed. One student posted that the college said they met requirements but funds had run out; that account is a reason to ask about allocation and timing, not evidence that students at other schools will receive no award.

When comparing GO Grant with TOPS, separate the tests: TOPS is merit-based and has academic-renewal rules; GO Grant requires Pell and remaining need. Public student posts also show confusion when aid appears in one part of a package but not another. Before covering a bill with a loan or credit card, request a statement separating confirmed aid, estimated aid, total cost and payment deadline. LOSFA offers help at 225-219-1012 or 800-259-5626 and lists weekday hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
