About Wildcat Lake
Wildcat Lake is a recreation area associated with Lees-McRae College. Created in 1933 to meet water and energy needs, the lake has been owned by the college since 2022. Its current public offering includes a beach, docks, a pavilion and recreation areas, subject to seasonal conditions.
The official 2026 season ran from May 23 through September 7. It had ended by this edition's research cutoff. The lake therefore belongs in an account of Banner Elk's summer possibilities, but swimming should not be recommended as an available activity for an autumn visit.
Swimming requires lifeguard presence, and private watercraft are subject to authorized periods established by management. Water, a beach and docks do not themselves constitute permission for year-round use. Lifeguard hours and rules need checking for each new season before visitors make plans around them.
During a summer trip, Wildcat Lake provides a more leisurely recreation option than mountain hiking. Its place in this selection is to describe that opportunity with its limits.
