About Maine State Grant Program
For a Maine family comparing a college bill with available income, the Maine State Grant is a state need-based grant administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). Its practical advantage is that the program does not describe a separate grant form: a completed FAFSA serves as the application. That does not make an award automatic or guaranteed; the institution reviews need, residency, enrollment, and other criteria before including a grant in the aid package.
For academic year 2026–27, FAME lists a maximum of $2,500 for eligible full-time students and up to $1,250 for students enrolled at least half-time but below full-time. The current page also lists a maximum Student Aid Index of 10,000, subject to funding and possible adjustment. The grant applies to eligible initial certificate, associate, or bachelor’s programs at qualifying schools, generally in Maine. A possible exception is NEBHE’s Tuition Break for certain approved out-of-state programs, which requires individual confirmation.
The calendar requires care: the official 2026–27 guidelines say the FAFSA was due by May 1, 2026, a date that has passed. Although the current information page says FAFSA is the application and does not show a new deadline for that cycle, anyone who filed late should ask FAME and the college whether the file can still be considered; a late FAFSA should not be assumed to secure funds. For 2027–28, prepare to file when FAFSA opens and ask the financial-aid office to confirm receipt, valid SAI, credits, residency status, and payment timing. The grant is paid directly to the institution.
