About American Academy of Oral Medicine
American Academy of Oral Medicine: Representing Oral Medicine
The American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) is a professional organization founded in 1945 that represents the discipline of oral medicine. Oral medicine is the dental specialty responsible for the care of medically complex patients and for the diagnosis and management of diseases, disorders, and conditions affecting oral and maxillofacial health. Its members care for thousands of patients whose underlying medical conditions affect oral health and the delivery of dental care. The AAOM advocates for optimal oral health and healthcare for individuals with medical illnesses.
Activities and Member Benefits
The academy organizes national meetings with reduced rates for its members, as well as conferences, workshops, and seminars. It also promotes research cooperation with dental and other educational institutions to develop oral medicine programs. Its activities include sponsoring the American Board of Oral Medicine, publishing the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology (OOOO), developing pre- and postdoctoral oral medicine programs, and publishing newsletters and monographs (Clinician's Guides) in English and Spanish. It also offers professional recognition, fellowships, and awards, and manages the Awards and Endowment Fund, which sponsors student graduate awards and abstract and research awards.
Certification and Training
The AAOM offers credentials through the American Board of Oral Medicine, which examines and certifies candidates who have received approved postdoctoral training. The requirements correspond to those of national specialty boards. The academy also administers academic fellowship and Affiliate Fellowship (AAF) programs, with an application process and study resources. In education, it provides information on residency programs, advanced programs, career paths for oral medicine physicians, and a board review course. It also maintains a job board.
Resources for Professionals and Patients
The AAOM invites all healthcare providers to join the academy, participate in its community, and receive the benefits of membership. For the public, it offers resources such as the Find a Doctor feature, information on patient conditions, and clinical guidelines. The academy also publishes clinical practice statements and newsletters. Oral medicine is recognized as the 11th dental specialty by the American Dental Association (ADA).

The academy organizes and participates in various scientific events. These include the 2026 Fall Meeting, to be held on October 16, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine; the 2027 Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute Oral Oncology Symposium, scheduled for April 16-17, 2027, in collaboration with the AAOM and Baptist Health at the Hilton Miami Dadeland in Miami, Florida; and the 2027 EAOM/AAOM Joint Meeting, under the theme "Global Oral Medicine: Innovation, Integration and Collaboration," to take place from September 21-25, 2027, in Rhodes, Greece.
