About Atlanta Metropolitan State College — Main Campus
Atlanta Metropolitan State College sits on 65.4 acres in southwest Atlanta, a few minutes from downtown by car according to the institution. Its one-campus footprint makes it a different proposition from a district spread over several suburbs: admissions, the Student Center, academic divisions and student activities share the Metropolitan Parkway address. The college is part of the University System of Georgia and calls itself an access-oriented state college, so it should not be confused with an associate-only community college.
The academic catalog includes associate of arts and associate of science pathways, certificates and a smaller range of bachelor’s degrees. Current fields include business administration, biological sciences, criminal justice, film and entertainment studies, organizational leadership, information systems, cybersecurity, psychology, social work and teacher education. Some associate routes are designed for transfer; others are career-focused. A program worksheet identifies the required sequence and credits, so a two-year timeline is a planning model rather than an automatic completion date.
For admission, the college lists a minimum 2.0 high-school GPA and requests an official high-school transcript or GED, plus records from prior colleges when applicable. Testing is not a general admissions requirement; ACCUPLACER can help students qualify out of corequisite English or math support. The FAFSA code is 012165. The 2026–27 on-campus schedule lists Georgia-resident tuition of $110 per credit and $340 in mandatory fees each term: 12 credits total $1,660 before books or course-specific charges. A visitor should obtain a parking pass from Public Safety; the college’s directions page also points students to MARTA trip planning.
AMSC began classes in September 1974 as Atlanta Junior College with 504 students. Its campus life page describes clubs, basketball, community service and a virtual tour; the Student Outreach and Access office can arrange a campus visit. For adult English instruction, Atlanta Public Schools lists free ESL and citizenship classes at various Atlanta and Fulton County sites. Those noncredit classes are separate from AMSC admission, and a student who later applies for a degree still follows the college’s transcript, residency and placement steps.
