About Skyland Trail

Skyland Trail: Residential and Day Treatment in Atlanta

Skyland Trail is a nonprofit mental health organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. With more than thirty years of history, according to its own presentation, it delivers a holistic program that combines evidence-based psychiatric treatment, integrated medical care, research, and education. The entity identifies itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with EIN 58-1489941.

Its services are organized into two distinct levels of care and two population groups: adults (18 and older) and adolescents (14 to 17).

Levels of Care

The most intensive level is residential treatment, which provides care and support 24 hours a day. Clients reside on campus in private rooms with private bathrooms. Day treatment, also called partial hospitalization program (PHP), is more intensive than weekly outpatient therapy: clients live at home and come to campus Monday through Friday.

Both levels are presented as options for direct admission or step-down transition within a recovery journey with graduated levels of support.

Assessment and Multidisciplinary Team

The evidence-based approach begins at admission with a comprehensive assessment. Based on the results, each client is assigned to a specialized treatment team and a structured schedule.

The multidisciplinary team described by the entity includes psychiatrists, individual therapists, family therapists, psychologists, nursing staff, primary care physicians, academic and vocational support, care coordinators and case managers, art and music therapists, horticultural therapists, recreational therapists, pastoral counselors, dietitians, personal trainers, psychometrists, TMS technicians, and certified peer counselors.

Integrated Wellness and Onsite Medical Care

All clients participate in programs designed to strengthen body and mind. They receive nutrition and active living counseling, with daily structured exercise groups. An onsite primary care clinic collaborates with the clinical team on lab testing and specialized assessments; clients with co-occurring medical issues, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, receive care at the center.

Family Involvement

The program helps families learn healthy and effective ways to support their loved one's progress. It offers a weekly family support and education group at no cost. With the client's permission, the center communicates openly with the family about their progress, and the onsite family therapy program works with many families on new ways of trust, communication, and mutual respect.

Conditions and Symptoms Treated

The residential and day programs treat adults and adolescents with the following conditions and symptoms:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depressive disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Co-occurring substance use dual diagnosis
  • Co-occurring trauma-related disorders
  • Suicidal ideation and frequent suicide attempts
  • Self-harming behaviors

Therapeutic Routine and Campus Life

Clients participate in structured therapeutic activities Monday through Friday, typically in a different group each hour. In the afternoons and on weekends, structured activities are organized on campus and in the community, including outings to museums, sporting events, and restaurants in Atlanta.

Admission, Insurance, and Coverage

Client admission is voluntary and occurs through referral from a mental health professional or organization; self and family referrals are also accepted. The residential and day programs are in-network with many private insurance plans. The entity publishes information on admission criteria, process, fees, and insurance, as well as on health plan price transparency.

Education, Research, and Community Activity

Education is part of the organization's stated mission, offering professionals, families, and community members opportunities to learn about mental health and psychiatric treatment. It maintains lines of work in research and patient outcomes, and organizes activities such as a weekly online group program for adults (DBT Next Steps), a series of free webinars on parenting skills for families of adolescents, and a 5K charity race scheduled for Saturday, September 12, open to individuals, families, and corporate and youth groups.
